Android 5.0 beats iOS 8 in terms of infrequent app crashes

I’m sure we’ve all seen our fare share of mobile OS debates on the Internet where people bicker back and forth about why their choice is superior. It’s all just a matter of preference, both Android and iOS have their pros, cons, quirks, and unique features. Even so, it is still interesting to keep track of how the two fare against each other in various fields and it looks like in terms of app stability, Android wins.

Android 5.0 Lollipop may not feel like the most stable operating system Google has ever put out, though a new report seems to claim otherwise. According to data from mobile application performance management solution Crittercism, application crash rates are .2% lower on devices running Lollipop than devices running iOS 8. According to the report, Android Lollipop’s app crash rate is at a mere 2%, while the app crash rate on iOS 8 is 2.2%. The data also shows that iOS 8 has a higher app crash rate than iOS 7, with only a 1.9% rate. When talking specifically of Android, Lollipop’s crash rate is significantly less than previous versions of Android. Apps on KitKat and Ice Cream Sandwich both crash the same amount at 2.6%. Unfortunately, there was no information regarding the crash rates of devices running Jelly Bean.

  1. How is this information even relevant? 1.6% of Android phones have Lollipop installed as of February 2, 2015 (http://developer.android.com/about/dashboards/index.html#2015), and 72% of users have iOS8 installed as of February 2, 2015 (https://developer.apple.com/support/appstore/). Trying to compare an 18 wheeler vs. A bicycle (72% vs. 1.6%) is good kg to create a very skewed and unleveled comparison.

Why not try comparing Lollipop vs. KitKat vs. Jelly Bean?

Do these Android writers even know how to compare Apples to Lemons? Because we all know which phones are Apple’s, and which phones are lemons.
