Android Overtakes iPhone; Will Steal Apple’s Girlfriend Next

*Sniff*. Sorry, I’m getting emotional. It’s just that… they… they just grow up so fast! Yes, our little Android, who just a couple of years ago was just a little babe in swaddling cloths, has now overtaken Apple’s ubiquitous smartphone in sales. Today, the Nielsen Company will announce that phones based on Google’s mobile operating system accounted for 27% of new subscribers, as compared to the iPhone’s 23%. In certain ways, this is unsurprising. Android is available on multiple handsets, including the popular Motorola Droid and HTC EVO 4G. It’s a bit like Windows being available on everything from a Dell or HP to a custom-made box from your local computer shop. Still, as any company who has tried to take on Apple will tell you, challenging the gang at Cupertino is no easy task, particularly when it comes to taking mindshare from Apple. That Google, in two short years, has been able to pull neck and neck with Apple is both impressive and well-deserved.

  1. Should anyone be surprized? There’s so much more you can do with an android device than with an iPhone and so many more phones to choose from!

  2. Umm gee I wonder why… maybe because Android Phones are in every market, on every carrier? iPhone would easily dominate the market if it was on multiple carriers in the US.

  3. It is great to watch this battle. Android is to the PC what iOS is to, well, Apple back in the day. It will be fun to watch how this plays out.
