Bitly acquires social publishing tool Twitterfeed

Bitly, whose mission is to reinvent how people discover and share content on the web, has officially acquired Twitterfeed.

Twitterfeed allows bloggers to “feed their blogs to Twitter,” Facebook, and other services using RSS. The acquisition will be used to bring the enhanced sharing functionality of Twitterfeed directly to bitly.com, making it easier to collect, organize, shorten and share links. Currently, Bitly is one of the leading URL shortening services. It was even Twitter’s preferred shortening service until the company decided to develop their own.

“For years now, we’ve worked closely with our friends at Twitterfeed to enhance their social media publishing tools with branded short links and real-time data,” Bitly writes on its blog. “Today, we are excited to announce that we have acquired Twitterfeed, and to welcome both Twitterfeed and its users to the Bitly family.”

According to Bitly, the company is already “hard at work” with the Twitterfeed team to better integrate the two services. However, both services are expected to continue operating without interruption through the change of ownership.

Twitterfeed founder Mario Menti added, “I myself will continue to be involved in Twitterfeed much as before, except now as part of Bitly. In the short term, nothing dramatic will change, while we are looking into areas where closer co-operation and development make sense.”
