Ford’s BlueCruise is Undergoing an Investigation For US Safety Concerns

NHTSA’s Investigation:

The US authorities raise concerns over Ford’s BlueCruise. This advanced driver assistance system that provides hands-free driving solutions, is under a critical investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The action was taken after two deadly collisions took place involving Ford Mustang Mach E vehicles, where the cars collided with stationary objects. In April, the investigation was initiated and has now advanced to an engineering analysis level. The agency is going to conduct a more thorough investigation into BlueCruise and its potential shortcomings, which includes conducting vehicle evaluations, reviewing technical data, and conducting additional research on related crashes and non-crash reports. NHTSA’s investigation reveals that BlueCruise has difficulty detecting stationary vehicles in certain situations, such as high speeds or poor lighting. NHTSA said, “Additionally, system performance may be limited when there is poor visibility due to insufficient illumination.”

Ford’s BlueCruise:

BlueCruise was launched in 2021, where it incorporated cameras, radar sensors and software to combine adaptive cruise control, and lane centring along with speed-sign recognition. The system operated hands-free on pre-mapped highways and was equipped with cameras inside the cabin to ensure the visibility of drivers. Around 129,000 vehicles have been equipped with the system, which is also present in some Mustang Mach E and F-150 pickup trucks. Although Ford is cooperating with NHTSA, the inquiry raises questions about BlueCruise’s ability to distinguish stationary items and operate in low visibility conditions.

Industry Rivalries:

GM’s Super Cruise and Tesla’s Autopilot are both competing with the system, each offering similar features for advanced driver assistance technology. In contrast to Tesla’s Autopilot, BlueCruise is restricted technologically and has less advancement. The investigation into BlueCruise is in line with ongoing inquiries into Tesla’s “Full Self-Driving” technology, which has been associated with some accidents. The research highlights the difficulties faced by automakers in managing innovation and safety. As NHTSA continues to examine these systems, the safety and limitations of autonomous driving technology are a significant concern.
