Has Google Already Purchased Groupon?

There is a lot of chitter chatter going on throughout the tech industry about a big potential acquisition of Groupon by Google, but the biggest question yet is whether or not Google has already purchased the site. Some reports have already been released that have stated that Google has already purchased the site. The only thing that is missing, however, is a confirmation from either company.

VatorNews has reported that an unnamed source has informed them that Google has already purchased Groupon for $2.5 billion. However, the certainty of this being the actual truth is under question (we know all too well how websites love to jump the gun in order to receive links). The unnamed source bit is also unconvincing.

However, there is still a real possibility of Google purchasing Groupon. In fact, it would be quite shocking if Google wasn’t in the bidding for Groupon, as the site seems to offer something that Google needs and that Facebook already has. Groupon and Google make a lot of sense, as it will empower Google with the opportunity to tie in hyper-local deals with Google Search, thus making the site even more powerful. It also gives Facebook some reason to worry.

In fact, one person is so convinced that Groupon is for sale that this person went ahead and created their own Groupon sale page offering details of a sale for the Groupon website.

One billion off the list price? Well that’s a steal!

Indeed, Google might have already purchased Groupon. But until we have confirmation from either Google or Groupon of such an acquisition, it all still remains a huge rumor.

Update: Here’s another case for the rumor mill. Yet another source is claiming an offer of $5.3 billion with a $700 million earnout. So $6 billion for a coupon site and only $1.6 billion for the world’s largest video sharing site. Crazy!
