Is Technology Eating Away at our Personal Relationships

Technology has advanced dramatically since the days of the Baby Boomers so much so, that all of our history’s milestones such as radio, television, print and recorded media are now all accessible in one place, the Internet.

This massive increase has exploded an array of Technology, from various sizes of laptops, sleeker desktops, tablets and smart phones. These gadgets are very useful in cutting down the amount of time we spend in one place while on the web as well as enabling us to keep in touch wirelessly while on the go.

However, have we lost our ability to know when to hold them and know when to fold them when it comes to technology? It seems as though we have deserted our social norm of paying attention to those in the physical form. Arguably since we all seem to have one or more of the above listed, perhaps our social norm has shifted, and we are now accepting of people being buried in their electronics.

Or are we? Some may agree that there are certain moments throughout the day that may be preferred to disconnect or life moments that deserve our full attention, the question is, how do we know when to shut ourselves off when the electronics of choice provide us with easy access to the world on demand?

Others have stated that personal relationships have evolved, even creating offline friendships and love stories, but does this compensate for the established relationships we have within our lives that may not be as accepting to the time spent online?

Common sense is to believe that physical presence should override the gadgets that are handy but not in the times when our undivided attention is needed. Such times could include when eating dinner, having a conversation or while at work (depending on your field of course.)

Too many of us are tempted to check-in to our social networks that sometimes we may stray from the true value and worth that social media has provided for us, the ability to connect… with people. Let’s not lose sight of the people that are in our offline world, and learn time management when it comes to Technology. Love technology, your electronics, social media and all the glorious advancements that have occurred, this is simply a friendly reminder to love your loved ones first.
