“Social Discovery” spins social networking away from the mundane

Social Discovery

The same people. The same updates. The promise of social media being a way to find the fresh and new has come and gone for many. Everyone seems to be on Facebook these days, leaving our streams constantly bombarded by pictures of our nephews and gossip between friends. The funny duck pictures that you used to love seem to be repeating themselves on your buddy’s wall. There’s more to social networking, right?

In comes social discovery.

It’s nothing new. It’s been around since the early days of StumbleUpon and Tagged and has continued to grow in interest due to Pinterest. The growth is advancing faster than ever before now, perhaps because we’re sick of the mundane updates and repetitive content that our friends and family are posting.

Through social discovery, users are able to bring the unknown back into their Web 2.0 world. The content is more fresh. The people are true strangers. It’s appealing to those who simply want an avenue through which to be presented with something new rather than more of the same thing.

It’s growing. It will continue to grow beyond 2012.
