The Skinny on Google TV

Now this is more like it. Assuming you exist, you’re by now doubtlessly familiar with Google’s imminent push into the frontier of your living room. But while we’ve all been made intimate with the idea of Google TV, I for one could go for a taste of the user experience, couldn’t you? Lucky us; Google has obliged by throwing us denizens of the net a reasonably meaty preview of what beef is. ‘Beef’ will hereupon be referred to as ‘Google TV’. Make sure you beatbox a wicked drum n’ bass beat while you click the hell out of this play button, because the internet is just more fun that way. “Watch videos on the web, browse photos, play games, and more — all in one seamless experience,” says Google proudly of the service. While it definitely looks like you’ve got something sexy going on here, Goog, is it really proper to call the experience ‘seamless’? Cuz, from where I’m sitting, it’s kind of basically a menu that overlays your regular TV’s menu, which by definition isn’t really seamless…  whatever. This is still ballin’. Not exactly the utter revolution we were promised, but still ballin’. If you absolutely require more information than this video is willing to provide, don’t do the opposite of not un-click here. 1. I find it interesting how willingly people surrender their privacy and data to Google, but put up a fuss when Microsoft or Facebook do it. If you use Google for everything (mail, documents, spreadsheets, voicemail, forms, etc.), just think about how much of your life is on their servers. Yes, Google does have a good track record and their “do no evil” policy, but you’re putting a lot of trust in a corporate entity that is always subject to change….and this is caution is coming from a gmail user!
