Verizon’s Knockout Punch: Unlimited Data for iPhone

It was never quite certain when Verizon would get its hands on the iPhone, but we recently learned that it would on February 10. The only question remaining was how much the plans were going to be to have the iPhone. Now we have that answer too: $30 per month. But the news here is that this pricing will be for unlimited data, which could prove that — while two iPhones are better than one — two iPhones are somewhat different from each other. AT&T’s data pricing per month for DataPlus and DataPro is currently 200MB for $15 and 2GB for $25, respectively. The plans are more aggressively priced, but there is a cap on how much data users can use. From personal experience, I use around 1.6GB per month of data on my Droid X with only marginal usage; it is only a matter of time before that 2GB will be exceeded. On Verizon, though, this isn’t a problem. Verizon is keeping things simple by offering its standard data rate of $30 per month for unlimited data, which is sure to keep current customers very happy. The interesting thing is that this could be far cheaper than AT&T’s plans if you use more than 2GB per month. If you use less than 2GB, Verizon’s plan is a bit more expensive, however. But could you really argue with unlimited data, especially in a time when smart phones are consuming so much more content? So now we know: the Verizon iPhone will have unlimited data. Party at my place!

  1. “unlimted” in that they reserve the right to cut you off if your usage adversely affects network performance of other users.
